What steps can you take if you are in a car accident
Car accidents are full of uncertainty and surprises and are never easy, but following these steps may save you from stress and the pain of wondering, confusion and what to do at that moment.
STEP 1: CHECK ON EVERYONE INVOLVED in the accident
If any personal injuries require medical assistance, call 911 right away.
STEP 2: SCAN THE ACCIDENT SCENE QUICKLY
At the accident scene, check for any potential safety threats, such as shattered glass, sharp metal, or fluids leaking from the accident vehicle.
STEP 3: TAKE PEOPLE TO THE SAFETY
If you have passengers with you while meeting an accident, get them out of the vehicle for their protection and yours.
STEP 4: GET POLICE INVOLVED
If there are no personal injuries but more than $1,000 in damage to the vehicles, call the police non-emergency number and wait until the police arrive.
In some cases, if your vehicle is driveable, police may ask you to move your car and report the accident at the collision reporting center, or they will ask you questions about the accident and your vehicle over the phone.
In this situation, Auto hut can guide you and advise you about what to do next, depending on the situation.
Please note: If your vehicle is not driveable, call our 24/7 roadside assistance service, and we will help you throughout the process. We service GTA and areas. Not only this, we provide this towing service free of cost to our body shop customers. If later, you decide to fix your vehicle from somewhere else, we will charge you a fixed towing fee (less than $150) – Please be advised other towing companies’ fees vary from $500 to $1500
STEP 5: EXCHANGE INSURANCE INFORMATION
You should get other driver’s insurance, vehicle, and driver’s license information.
STEP 6: TRY TO FIND WITNESSES
Be on the safe side – If there was any eyewitness on the scene get their names and contact information.
STEP 7: MAKE NOTES ABOUT EVERYTHING
It is recommended to take notes about everything you remember as soon as possible; for example, time, location, the significant intersection nearby and what exactly happened. If it is possible and safe for you, take photographs of the scene and all the damaged vehicles.
Please note: As Canadians, we say ‘sorry’ a lot. However, in the case of an accident, do not apologize to the other driver. It can be used against you in court.
